Fertility preservation is a preventative measure for those needing or wanting more time to plan pregnancy. It is the process of saving or protecting eggs, sperm, or reproductive tissue so that a person can use them to have biological children in the future

• Indications of Egg freezing

Advanced age,

Treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs and pelvic radiotherapy for cancer,

Women with risk factors may be candidates before ovarian failure ensues,

Endometriosis who may experience reduced ovarian reserve post-surgery

Autoimmune diseases requiring gonadotoxic treatment

Primary ovarian insufficiency

Fertility preservation in gender reassignment surgery

Emergency oocyte freezing (when partner is not able to produce sample in IVF)

• Pros and cons

Pros

It provides them with the possibility of becoming a genetic parent using their frozen–thawed eggs later in life at advanced maternal age.

It reduces the risk of having children with chromosomal abnormalities associated with ovarian aneuploidy. 

In addition, for women who do not have a partner or for women who have moral concerns about the status of a developing embryo, egg freezing may be a preferable alternative to embryo freezing.

Cons

Patient has to undergo stimulation and egg collection in IVF centre. (Day care, safe procedure)
